DOCTORS ARE MORE DEPRESSED THAN EVER – HARVARD RESEARCH
Recent Harvard Medical School Study revealed
that one in four new doctors is depressed, a rate that’s four times worse than
the general public.
The issue starts with
the age-old problem of exhausting training, long hours, stress and
responsibility, but has gotten worse over the last five years as the profession
has changed.
Data from the survey
of more than 17,500 medical
residents show that 29% of doctors
had depression or symptoms of it.
The research also
indicated that beyond
causing personal anguish among doctors, depression also increases the
likelihood of human error in health care delivery to patients.
Based on the findings, Gynecologist surgeon Dr.Fred
Adjei Oti Boah agrees but says the environmental conditions are different
compared to Ghana.
He tells Adom, the situation can be risky but
not as worse in Ghana.
Meanwhile, Psychologist Dr Emmanuel Asampong has
agreed to the effects of the depression and the likelihood of the causes here
in Ghana if doctors do not pay attention to their health.
