Great photos and selfies, supercool fingerprint sensor – the Huawei G8

Huawei_Ascend_G8_6654721This is my first time using and reviewing a Huawei phone and I must say that I am impressed with the Huawei G8 already. It reminds me a bit of my old Samsung Galaxy S4 in terms of the look, but it feels more solid as it is full metal bodied and slightly thicker. It fits and feels elegant in the palm when using it, and it has great camera quality as well as the supercool fingerprint feature.
The Huawei G8 has a strong spec-sheet including an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. Its CPU runs at 1.5 GHz and with 2 GB of RAM, the G8 has more than enough memory for my favourite apps and games.
The G8’s metal body is 152.50 mm high and 76.50 mm wide, and has a depth of 7.50 mm. It has a 5.5 inch display, which qualifies it for a phablet. The screen has a  great resolution of 1,920 pixels by 1,080 pixels, making it a 1080p HD screen. This means images and videos appear sharp and clear, as well as general display on screen.
The G8 runs on the latest EMUI 3.1 and utilises Android 5.1.1. The EMUI 3.1 adopts Android Lollipop, without Google’s new material design. The user interface has remained flat with almost no traces of Google’s latest aesthetics.
One supercool feature of the G8 is the camera quality. It has a 13 megapixel rear (primary) camera which produce high quality photos close to DSLR capabilities. Its 5 megapixel front camera makes it a good selfie phone. It can capture 1080p high definition video with its primary camera.

The camera interface is a very clean and simple. On each side of the virtual shutter button you get swipe controls that will take you into the photo, video, Beauty, Time-lapse and Good food modes. It also has an advanced menu where you can choose from more shooting modes such as HDR, Panorama and adjust things like object tracking, smile shutter, touch to capture switch, geo-tagging , ISO, white balance, and more.
The 5MP front camera produces nice shots. The camera app also has a “Beauty mode” enabled by default and it works as advertised, although we personally find the results somewhat a bit over the top. The Huawei G8 offers 1080p videos at 30fps. Videos are stored as MP4 files and it has  stereo sound at 96Kbps.
Another really cool feature of the Huawei G8 is the clever and incredibly accurate fingerprint sensor. I have become a big fan of fingerprint sensors on phones since I am not one for locking phones with passwords – it makes me feel like I’m hiding something. However fingerprint sensors makes it feel like a seamless feature on my phone that gives me ownership access.
However,  the sensor of the G8 has some extra tricks up its sleeve. There is a maximum of 5 fingerprint that you can have stored and the security feature can also be used for locking apps or multimedia content.nIt recognises swipe gestures and can be used to bring down the notification shade and dismiss notifications. A swipe down on it brings down the notification shade, while a quick flick across skips through photos in the gallery app.
