CSM hits Volta region as pneumococcal meningitis kills 32

One person has tested positive to Cerebro-Spinal meningitis in the Volta region.

The patient was among seven other suspected cases of pneumococcal meningitis reported in the Krachi west district of the region.

The regional health director, Dr. Joseph Nuertey in an interview with Starr News said the health directorate is adequately prepared to prevent the spread of the two strains of the disease.

He said the surveillance system was being strengthened to be more sensitive and called for public support.

The northern part of Ghana is in the meningitis zone but some districts and communities outside the zone have reported cases in a recent outbreak.

At least 32 people in the Brong Ahafo, Ashanti and Northern regions reportedly died having suffered from pneumococcal meningitis.

Until now cerebro-spinal meningitis was the only known meningitis variant in the country and it occurs mainly in the northern parts of the country.
