Residents of Abofu in Accra live in
fear and panic, over the life threatening state of a widely used footbridge in the area.
The
footbridge which is widely known as Abofu New Overhead can be found on the N1 highway right before Achimota overhead; now a time ticking death trap.
Since its inception the bridge provide safety for pedestrians as well as residents who feel safe when using it that crossing of the highway.
In an interview with some of the residents they explained that the footbridge got destroyed a week ago,
when a loaded articulated truck forced its way underneath it resulting in the
bridge’ damage.
The incident which occurred griped residents with fear as two women were allegedly using the bridge when the articulated truck bumped into the bridge that hot afternoon.
Speaking to pedestrians who use the bridge more often they narrated that although they are scared of walking over the damaged bridge it seems convenient that using the highway underneath it.
Residents say that it is difficult for school children and aged persons to use the
bridge in its current state but they try to overlook the fear and have called on Authorities to see this issue rectified before dooms day.
In a recent development Footbridge contractors have visited the place to access the level of damage as they tell residents repairs will start soon.
The question is how soon?
