Cedi will end 2016 Gh¢4.7 to a dollar – Databank Analyst

An economic analyst at Databank, Courage Kingsley Martey, has suggested that the local currency – the Ghana Cedi - could end the year between Gh¢4.7 and Gh¢5.1 to a US Dollar.

Last year, Mr Martey predicted the Ghana Cedi to end the year at 3.9 to a dollar. The local currency subsequently ended at 3.8 to a dollar.

The economic analyst stated that the cedi is likely to follow the same trend as recent years and depreciate due to lower inflows of foreign exchange and a rise in demand for foreign currencies.

Mr Martey suggested that the stability of the Ghana Cedi in January was due to revenue inflows accrued from foreign debt instruments.

He was less optimistic about the Cedi’s fortunes from February onwards. He explained that certain external factors coupled with an increased demand for foreign exchange would put pressure on the local currency.

“The cedi experienced stability in the last quarter of 2015 mainly because of some inflows accrued from foreign debt instruments. As a result, the country closed the year with reserves significantly above three months import cover,” he said.

“Due to this, the cedi maintained its stability in January. As we enter February, sustainability of the exchange rate stability would be tested by the re-emergence of the seasonal pressures and elevated external risks.

“Crude oil price remains low while the gold price could slump depending on the United States’ monetary policy. These commodities are two of Ghana’s main sources of foreign exchange,” he said.

“Conversely, the repayment period for COCOBOD’s facility begins around that time, ultimately constraining foreign exchange inflows. Additionally, businesses would be looking to restock goods sold during the Christmas period, leading to an increased demand for foreign currencies,” he stated.

Mr Martey suggested that the cedi may depreciate the highest during the first half of 2016 due to the pressures of repayment and increased demand. He added that the latter half of the year would witness a less dramatic depreciation.

In November this year, the nation heads to the polls. Previous election years have been characterized with rising inflation, higher liquidity and a steep depreciation of the cedi.

Mr Martey indicated that this election year would be an improvement on previous ones due mainly to the presence of the International Monetary Fund.

“Unlike in previous [election] times, we started this year under the IMF program. So we expect the fiscal and monetary discipline to continue throughout this year,” he said.

Real estate is one of the main sectors of the economy affected by foreign exchange. Properties are typically valued in foreign currencies, emphasizing the need for a stable cedi.

Akua Nyame-Mensah, Managing Director of Lamudi Ghana, said: “The cedi’s stability is very important for Ghana’s economy, especially housing.

“A long term stability of the cedi would maintain confidence in the financial and real estate sectors. This would lead to lower interest and mortgage rates, paving the way for more house hunters to own their very own home,” she said.

Onsy in court to stop CPP presidential primaries

Disqualified CPP presidential aspirant Dr. Onsy Nkrumah has filed a petition at the Human Rights court seeking to injunct the party’s presidential primaries which comes off tomorrow, January 30.

According to him, his disqualification by the party was unjust and baseless.

Onsy who claims to be the son of Ghana’s first President Dr. Kwame Nkrumah was disqualified after he presented a cheque instead of a banker’s draft for his filing fee.

In his statement of claim, the controversial politician asked the court to order the party to reinstate him in the race.

“The plaintiff was manhandled and was only lucky that some good Samaritans were around to whisk him away from the hands from the hands of the [CPP] who had planned to block his attempt at filling his nominations forms.

“The plaintiff says he has made several attempts to file his nomination but either the defendant had caused thugs to block him at the entrance to the party offices or there had been no one at the party office to receive his nomination,” the writ said.

Delegates of the CPP from about 275 constituencies across the country will go to the polls Saturday to elect a presidential candidate for the 2016 elections. Four people, namely; Samia Nkrumah, Ivor Greenstreet, Bright Akwetey and one Joseph Agyapong are contesting the slot.

Some Black Stars players using 'juju' - Taylor

Former Accra Hearts of Oak playmaker Charles Taylor claims some Black Stars players could be involved in the practice of Black magic popularly known as ‘juju’.

In an interview with Peace FM, the former Black Stars player said “Yes it is possible that thing [black magic] is in football and most of the players do it.”

The use of black magic in the senior national team has been a long-standing debate. It became a topical issue in 2012 after former Ghana coach Goran Stevanovic attributed the team’s poor showing at the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations to the practice of black magic in camp.

Taylor's comment also comes days after a juju man claimed that he helped Black Stars defender Rashid Sumaila to cause an injury to Jerry Akaminko ahead of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Sumaila has denied the allegations saying he has no idea who the juju man is and his motive for such wild claims.

But Taylor who is now an ordained pastor states that he would not be surprised some Black Stars players use juju on each other.

“I will not be surprised if it is so in the Black Stars camp. It will be very difficult for you as a player if you don’t use it…most players who are God-fearing turn not to succeed in football because they don’t use black magic.

“This particular Black Stars team has had the same players being invited for the past five years, and it’s going to be difficult for a player to break into the team even if that player is very good.”

The attacker played for Hearts between 2000 and 2003 after joining from city rivals Great Olympics, before controversially transferring to Kotoko.

He was a member of Hearts’ 2000 Caf Champions League-winning squad as well as Ghana’s team at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, and the 2009 African Nations Championship.

Gov’t to release report on CMS fire today

The fire ravaged the CMS a year ago

Government will on Friday release its official position on the investigations into the fire that gutted the Central Medical Stores in Tema.

Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Marietta Brew Appiah-Opong, will issue the government statement following the approval of President John Dramani Mahama.

The investigative report into the fire which occurred in January last year states among others that the fire was a case of arson.

The Central Medical Store is where the country’s medical equipment and drugs are stored for onward distribution across the regions.

Over two hundred million cedis worth of drugs and equipment were destroyed in Tema which nearly crippled healthcare delivery.

Before the fire, the then Health Minister Dr. Kwaku Agyeman-Mensah had initiated investigations into allegations of corrupt practices at the store.

Bunkprugu riot:

Death toll rises to 3; 35 houses burnt

The death toll in the Bunkprugu renewed clashes has hit three as locals of Kpentogu and Bamungu fight each other.

Starr News’ Northern regional correspondent Eliasu Tanko said the riot which started Wednesday evening has rendered a lot of the residents homeless as 35 houses have been set on fire.

The Northern regional Police PRO ASP Ebenezer Tetteh has assured Starrfmonline.com the law enforcement agents are “in control of the situation.”

The renewed clashes was between the Jamong and Jafog (two Konkomba) clans in the area. It is, however, unclear what sparked the clashes.

Starrfmonline.com understands several people have fled the town to neighbouring Togo for safety.

In April 12, 2015, two persons died while 24 houses were set ablaze during similar clashes.

The town has been placed on curfew between 8pm and 6am.

The police has retrieved two Automatic Kalashnikov rifle (AK-47) in Bunkprugu as two clans renew clashes that dragged from Wednesday to Thursday.

There is an uneasy calm in the Northern regional township following fresh riot between the Jamong and Jafog (two Bimoba) clans of Kpentogu and Bamungu areas.

The police has confirmed the death of three people while 35 houses have been set ablaze, rendering several people homeless.

Vetting C’ttee cuts appointees’ entourage to 10

Parliament has cut down on the number of people who follow Ministerial nominees to their vetting sessions.

The committee in previous times had been bedeviled with multitude of people who accompany nominees to lend their support. Some are bused to the venue with drummers and retinue of chiefs, making the conference room “rowdy and congested.”

The Appointments Committee of Parliament has restricted the number of supporters to 10 henceforth and has vowed to keep to that number.

The Committee said it has communicated its directive to all the ministerial nominees due for vetting next week and anyone who fails to comply will “not be vetted.”

“The nominees themselves will not be allowed to come with more than 10 persons including spouses. We have designed an invitation card that will be given to every member and when they are coming you have to hold your invitation card and if you don’t have it you can’t have access,” a member of the committee Alhaji Muntaka Mohammed told Accra-based Joy FM.

“If any appointee comes with more than 10 people, be rest assured that we are not going to vet that person. We have informed them individually to come and take their invitation cards and the number include spouses and children.

“It has become a major worry for all of us in Parliament… People travel overnight and when they get here they get tired and people sleep all over the place and we can’t allow this anymore.

“We are going to tighten security to make sure on the said day, there will be escort and supporters will be outside the precinct of parliament,” the Asawase MP said.

Asante Akyem MP faces arrest for ‘fueling’ Agogo conflict

Police in the Ashanti region have invited the Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North Kwadwo Baah Agyemang for questioning following his comments in the raging tensions between residents of Agogo and Fulanis living there.

Sources say some comments made by the MP have led to the escalation of hostilities among the feuding factions.

Speaking to Starrfmonline.com Thursday the Ashanti regional Police Commander DCOP Kofi Boakye said Mr. Baah Boateng must produce himself or will be arrested.

“We have invited him to come and if he doesn’t come, we will arrest him,” he said.

So far, five cows have been burnt alive and one person injured in the sporadic gunshots that have accompanied the melee.

The nomads have been accused of perpetrating crimes including murder and rape besides the destruction of farm crops by their grazing cattle.

A police and military team have since been deployed to the area to maintain law and order
